OYO has launched a Substack!
Our labor project, Organize Your Organization!, launched a Substack to help you own your power as a worker.
It’s easy to imagine what happens when power rests at the top, with the corporate executives and nonprofit executive directors. It means being paid poverty wages when you are a single mom with several mouths to feed. It means working 60 hours a week for a boss who’s emotionally abusive, because it is for a “good” cause. It means being fired when you go to HR to file a discrimination complaint. It means losing half of your hours without explanation.
It’s easy to imagine because as workers we know these scenarios intimately. This is our norm, neoliberal capitalism hard at work. And this is why we must organize ourselves and unionize our workplaces. We’ll show you how.
We launched Organize Your Organization! A Guide to Unionizing Your Nonprofit Workplace earlier this year to overwhelmingly positive feedback about the utility of this step by step guide. Soon after launching the handbook, we realized we wanted to get into deeper discussions about its content and bring you real stories from workers around the country, to further inspire you to put your own worker power to use and build democracy in your organization.
This is what you’ll find on our Organize Your Organization Substack. In our first post, we reintroduce ourselves and talk in-depth about why nonprofit workers specifically need a union (if you’re a nonprofit worker this one isn’t to miss).
Please subscribe, share this page with a friend, and join us in the comments section of our first post. New posts will arrive once a month. We’ve got a particularly spooky post tee’d up for October.
